The outgoing governor of Edo State, Mr Adams Oshiomhole has renamed New Era College Samuel Ogbemudia College barely 48 hours after the former Sani Abacha’s Labour and Productivity Minister who once notoriously said “I will die for Abacha” reluctantly endorsed Obaseki to the chagrin of most of his hitherto admirers.
According to Oshiomhole, New Era College will now be known as Dr Ogbemudia College.
Residents of Benin City and the Old Students Association of the college have reacted to the development with majority of views against the decision to name a female secondary school after a name personage.
One of the respondents, a political commentator Mr George Kellyford Edigin, who spoke with our correspondent, said that the decision to rename New Era as Ogbemudia College was misplaced.
Foolish renaming coming from an illiterate Governor. No where in the world can you name a male school after a female or a female school named after a male. Our former Comrade has goofed again. Emotan, Idia, St Maria Gorretti, Itohan, Iyoba Colleges etc were all named after Females.” George Edigin said.
In the same vein, political observers in the state have linked the naming of the school after Ogbemudia barely 48 hours after the octogenarian endorsed his party candidate, Mr Obaseki, to a possible blackmail or bribe to coerce the old man into acting against his conscience.
“Why the haste to rename a female school after a male. All in a bid to score cheap political point.” Mr Edigin queried.
